Food waste is one of the biggest issues we face today.

Globally, we waste between 33-50% of all the food produced for human consumption. In Australia alone, 7.6 million tonnes of food is wasted each year which is the equivalent of one in five bags of groceries per household per year.

Of the 7.6 million tonnes of food wasted in Australia, 70% is edible. This is perfectly good food that is costing the economy a staggering $36.6 billion and costing the average household around $2,500 each year.

Meanwhile, 1 in 6 Australian adults haven't had enough to eat and 1.2 million children have gone hungry in the last year. Exacerbated by the pandemic, Food Bank estimates that approximately 1.4 million Australians were accessing food relief charities in 2020.

According to Project Drawdown:

Reducing food waste is the #1 solution to fighting the climate crisis.

The majority, 2.5 million tonnes, of food waste in Australia comes from our homes, of which, 92% goes directly to landfill. Reducing household food waste could save the average family up to $3,800 per year.

If we all do our bit, we can have a huge impact on the amount of food wasted and save money and the planet.
