SPAR Chevron: Gander's Debut in SPAR Australia Network

Explore the innovative partnership between SPAR and Gander in tackling food waste through digital solutions.

This week, SPAR Chevron, located in the Gold Coast, became the first store in the SPAR Australia network to partner with Gander, leading the charge in the fight against food waste.

SPAR's Global Partnership with Gander

In 2021, SPAR, the world’s largest food retail voluntary chain with over 13,900 stores worldwide, announced a partnership with the award-winning food waste app Gander to further tackle food waste with the network. The initial partnership included participating stores in Northern Ireland, with plans for a wider roll-out across all SPAR markets. Both parties sought to use digital solutions in food waste reduction within the retail sector, with this partnership marking another step on this path.

Gander offers SPAR a real-time automated mobile platform developed to help retailers sell more of their reduce-to-clear items through creating greater visibility of discounted products to consumers and offering shoppers more value.

The Gander platform enables retailers to automatically display to shoppers, in real-time, all markdowns on the shelves available within their stores. Participating SPAR retailers enabled customers to make real savings and reduce food waste in their local community by purchasing the price-reduced products available each week.

Speaking about the new partnership in 2021, Tobias Wasmuht, CEO of SPAR International, had said:

We are delighted to be working with Gander. As a global food retailer, we are committed to creating sustainable solutions for our customers as part of our goal of reducing food waste throughout the supply chain. With Gander’s proactive focus on food waste reduction and cutting-edge technology, this sets a solid basis for our partnership. Working with entrepreneurial platforms such as Gander provides sustainable solutions which are important as the industry seeks ways to reduce the environmental impact.

SPAR Chevron's Inaugural Launch with Gander

In 2023, Gander made its debut in the Australian market, providing Australian shoppers with real-time information on markdowns available in stores locally for the first time.

This week, SPAR Chevron joined the platform, marking a significant milestone as the first SPAR store within the Australian network to partner with Gander. This collaboration positions SPAR Chevron as a leader in the fight against food waste in the independent retail sector. Leveraging Gander's real-time automated mobile platform, SPAR Chevron ensures that discounted, near-expiry products are visible to shoppers, effectively reducing food waste while offering customers greater value.

This partnership creates a win-win-win scenario, benefiting retailers, shoppers, and the planet alike.
